The outerwear responds to the gentlemen’s rules, fixed more than 50 years ago, while anarchy seems to be the only answer for the underwear. In any office of the world, whether in a city or a town, it’s easy to see several men wearing the same formal clothes: suit; Oxford or white shirt; laced shoes; tie. But under the clothes? Actually each man expresses his personality through the underwear and celebrities like David Beckham or the actor Mario Lopez seem to have understood that. They are both successful and handsome men and recently they became both men’s underwear designers. David Beckham has a long lasting collaboration with the Swedish low-cost brand H&M for a basic underwear line, while Mario Lopez has his own line called M-RATED, characterized by a sexy-sporty appeal, and it’s having a great success in America.
The underpants are definitely the more important item of the male underwear and they’re is mainly divided into briefs, stretched trunks and woven boxers.
The briefs are one of the most dangerous item because they don’t fit all the types of physiques, in fact they are recommended for Michelangelo-like sculpted bodies or at least thin men. Concerning the colors of the briefs, instead of the classic black, white or gray, would be better to choose a different classic tone such as navy blue, hunter green or burgundy. The striped patterns woukd be good too, but ranging in more vivid colors, while there’s an absolute prohibition for animal prints, just to avoid embarrassing Freudian comparisons with beasts and birds.
The trunks are certainly the most popular item because they fit any kind of silhouette. For the trunks are discouraged solid colors, so it’s better to opt for two-tones with finishes and details in contrast, or patterns, not just striped, but also drawings or stylized motifs. No way for cartoon characters or comic book heroes, it would be a great humiliation and suffering, not so much for the wearer, but for those who has to see them.
Woven cotton boxers, the least of all and primarily made for those who have lost muscle tone. Absolute prohibition of solid white, preferring vertical striped or checkered patterns. Very risky item because of the terrible “grandfather’s underwear effect”.
The tank top and the t-shirt are the other two men’s underwear main pieces. The tank top should be avoided unless you practice a sport, but in that case, they loose thir function of underwear item bocoming real uniforms. The T-shirt is the only way of salvation from the cold of the winter, but it must be one color and preferably in basic colors. It could be even better if you match it with the tone of the pants. Concerning the materials and fabrics, it’s better to choose cotton or silk male underwear, avoiding synthetic fabrics. The only exception can be the high-tech fabrics such as Lycra, which in addition to slide more easily on the tissues, avoid the proliferation of germs and bacteria due to the perspiration.

Uno degli argomenti più insidiosi riguardante il guardaroba maschile è sicuramente l’Intimo. Una serie di capi talmente rischiosi da diventare vero e proprio tabù.
Se l’abbigliamento sembra debba rispondere a canoni e diktat intatti da più di metà secolo, nell’intimo regna l’anarchia. In un qualsiasi ufficio del mondo, che sia in una metropoli o in una cittadina, sarà facile vedere tanti uomini con indosso gli stessi abiti formali: completo giacca-pantalone; camicia Oxford o bianca; la stringata ai piedi; cravatta fantasia. Ma sotto i vestiti? Ogni uomo esprime la propria personalità attraverso l’intimo.
Questo messaggio sembra lo abbiano capito molto bene le celebrities come il calciatore David Beckham o l’attore Mario Lopez, entrambi begli uomini di successo ed entrambi stilisti di linee di intimo maschile. Il primo ha iniziato una collaborazione pluriennale con il colosso low cost svedese H&M disegnando una linea intimo basic che comprendesse tutte le tipologie di capi; il secondo ha optato per una linea dall’appeal sexy-sportivo, chiamata M-RATED, che sta già spopolando in America.
Il capo intimo più importante sono sicuramente le mutande che si dividono principalmente in slip (slip), boxer aderenti (stretch trunks) e boxer in tessuto (woven boxer).
Gli slip sono uno dei capi più pericolosi perché non si adattano a tutti i tipi di corpi, anzi sono fortemente sconsigliati a coloro che non vantino un fisico scultoreo michelangiolesco o quantomeno snello. Per quanto riguarda i colori, al posto delle classiche tinte unite bianco, nero o grigio è preferibile spaziare in una gamma più ampia, pur sempre rimanendo su tinte classiche come blue navy, verde militare e bordeaux. Ben vengano le fantasie rigate, magari anche in tinte più vivaci, mentre divieto assoluto per le fantasie animalier, onde evitare imbarazzanti paragoni Freudiani con bestie feline o volatili.
I trunks, ovvero i boxer elasticizzati aderenti, sono sicuramente il capo più diffuso perché si adattano ad ogni tipo di silhouette. Per questo capo sono fortemente sconsigliate le tinte unite, anzi meglio optare per boxer bicolori con dettagli e rifiniture a contrasto, oppure per le fantasie, non solo rigate, ma anche disegni o motivi stilizzati. No assoluto a personaggi dei cartoni animati o eroi dei fumetti, sarebbe una grande umiliazione e sofferenza non tanto per colui che le indossa, ma per chi le deve vedere.
Boxer in cotone, i meno belli di tutti e destinati principalmente a coloro che hanno perso la tonicità muscolare di un tempo. Divieto assoluto del monocolore bianco, prediligendo invece fantasie a righe, meglio se verticali o con motivi quadrettati. Ma attenzione, il rischio effetto “mutandone del nonno” è sempre dietro l’angolo.
Gli altri due capi intimi sono la canottiera e la t-shirt. Le canottiere (tank top) in realtà sarebbero un capo da evitare a meno che non si pratichi un’attività sportiva, ma in quel caso sono vere e proprie divise e perdono il valore di indumento intimo. Le T-shirt invece sono l’unica via di salvezza dal freddo dell’inverno, ma devono essere monocolore e preferibilmente in tinte basiche, meglio ancora se abbinate al tono delle mutande. Divieto assoluto di indossarle sotto la camicia… ça va sans dir.
In generale, comunque, per la scelta dei materiali per tutti i capi d’intimo, cercare sempre capi in cotone o seta ed evitare tessuti sintetici. Unica eccezione i tessuti tecnici come il Lycra, che oltre a far scivolare più facilmente i tessuti, evitano la proliferazione di germi e batteri dovuti alla sudorazione.
