“It is the tumult under the surface. The passions that shake you but that you always succeed in controlling”. This way Tilda Swinton, in a recent interview for the magazine Amica, explains her androgynous stule and her way of always looking staid, cold and detached, not really the result of a banal indifference, but of a sure awareness of herself.
An actress from London, she comes from a famous family of military tradition (his great-uncle is one of the inventors of the tank), she has attended an exclusive girl’s boarding school (for instance, her classmate was Diana Spencer), she is a graduate of the university in Cambridge in Political and Social Sciences.
At the age of 26 years she becomes the muse of Derek Jarman, homosexual director, “the first living artist I have ever met”, who gives her a part in all of his films from 1985 to 1994, the year of death of the director.
In 1992, she interprets the ambiguous character of the film “Orlando” (inspired by a novel by Virginia Woolf), embodying a character who changes sex during the course of the narration; the awe for her natural interpretation of the character consacrates her icon of the androgynous and ambiguous style.
