Lo stylist. Chi è costui?

Mai sentito parlare di Grace Coddington, Patricia Field, Nicola Formichetti, Emmanuelle Alt e Rachel Zoe? Sono solo alcuni dei piu’ famosi e conosciuti stylist di successo, i quali, nell’ ordine in cui li ho elencati sono dietro ai look di Vogue America, Sex&TheCity, Lady Gaga-Vogue Japan-Mugler,Vogue Paris e celebrities del calibro di Anne Hathway e Cameron Diaz.

The stylist. Who is he?

Have ever heard of Grace Coddington, Patricia Field, Nicola Formichetti, Emmanuelle Alt and Rachel Zoe? There are the most known and succesfull  fashion stylists , who, in the ordere that I mentioned them created the looks seen on Vogue America, Sex&TheCity, Lady Gaga-Vogue Japan-Mugler,Vogue Paris and celebrities like Anne Hathway e Cameron Diaz.

Proviamo ora, rispondendo ad alcune domande, a capire qualcosa di questa professione che, da i non addetti ai lavori, viene confusa con lo stilista. Inoltre, per chi volesse approfondire, come promesso dei riferimenti video-sitografici.

Chi è il/la fashion stylist? 

Il compito base dello stylist è quello di scegliere gli abiti e gli accessori giusti per creare degli outfit (look completi a capo a piedi) che corrispondano, suggeriscano, evochino un tema. Gli outfit creati possono essere per un servizio fotografico, una sfilata, una campagna pubblicitaria, per un video musicale, per il red carpet di una celebrity , etc… Per ottenere questo risultato i vestiti, gli accessori (scarpe, borse, gioielli) ed i props (elementi di scenografia i.e.una sedia, uno specchio, etc.. ) vengono chiesti in prestito dai marchi che si vogliono utilizzare, in cambio di pubblicità, o comprati. Sta all’abilità di PR dello stylist o dell’azienda per cui lavora procurarsi tutto cio’ di cui si ha bisogno.  Ma non finisce qui.

Let’s try now to learn something more about this profession that it is often mistaken , by those not in the know, with the figure of the fashion designer ( stilista, in Italian). Let’s answer just few basic questions.

Who is a fashion stylist?

The main task of a fashion stylist is to choose the right clothes and accessories in order to create an outfit ( a complete look for head-to-toe) that matches , hints or conjures up a theme or concept. The outfits are created for several projects: a photoshoot,  a runway show, an advert, a music video, a celebrity red carpet and so on…  To achieve these results clothes, accessories (shoes, bags, jewelry, hats) and props ( small object for the scenography, i.e. a chair, a mirror, etc..) can be either borrowed from designers, in return of advert credits, or purchased. It’s up to the stylist’s or company’s PR skills and connections to get all the stuff that is needed. But that’s not all.

Lo stylist non lavora da solo. Infatti si deve coordinare anche con il fotografo, il MUA ( make up artist) , il parrucchiere e a volte dire la sua anche sulla location. Il livello di coordinamento e collaborazione dipende dal tipo di progetto a cui si sta lavorando. Nella mia esperienza infatti
ci sono stati sia fotografi che ti vogliono silennzioso durante gli scatti ed altri invece che chiedono la tua opinione sugli scatti fatti o da fare; stesso discorso su MUA e parrucchiere, a cui vengono proposte delle opzioni e input per il look, i quali a volte colgono i suggerimenti ed altre invece poco o nulla.

Infine lo stylist è quella figura carismatica a cui spetta concretizzare la visione artistica/commerciale di editori, fotografi, stilisti o registi. Anche lui/lei è un creativo, ma con un occhio alla realtà e alla fattibilità dell’immagine e dell’outfit.

Come si inserisce nell’ingranaggio del fashion system?

Alla luce di quanto detto sopra lo
stylist puo’ quindi lavorare per una rivista,
per una casa di moda e definire con
lo stilista i look da mandare in passerella, lavorare ( spesso) come free lance ed avere, se famoso,
un’agenzia che lo rappresenta e attraverso riceve proposte di lavoro nei vari
ambiti di cui vi ho detto.

Come si diventa stylist?

Domanda da 1 milione di dollari!
Formalmente non viene richiesta nessuna qualifica specifica, ma è ovvio che se
si vuole veramente capire
come muoversi e come lavorare è opportuno (leggi , obbligatorio) fare un corso di fashion styling. Ovviamente le fregature sono sempre dietro l’angolo, per
cui informatevi MOLTO bene, anche
chiedendo un’opinione a chi ha frequentato il corso che volete seguire. Molto utili sono i forum on line ma anche contatti Facebook che lavorano nel settore. Mi capita spesso che mi chiedano consigli su quali corsi frequentare o opinioni su corsi specifici.

Spero che questa prima panoramica
sia stata chiara a sufficienza e che vi abbia stimolato ed incuriosito. La
prossima settimana entreremo nel vivo del lavoro di uno stylist, iniziando a scoprire come si crea un servizio
fotografico di moda, partendo da un’idea, un concetto e sviluppandolo in un moodboard.

The stylist doesn’t work on his/her own. In fact he has to coordinate his work with the photographer, the MUA ( make up artist) and hairstylist and sometimes even have his say on the location. The degree of coordination and collaboration depends on the kind of project that it’s been wored on. In my experience, in fact, I met photographer who want the stylist slent and still when they shoot, and others that ask for your opinion; the same things applies to the MUA and hair stylist, to whom you give options and hints about the look, that sometimes they get and sometimes don’t at all.

Finally, the stylist is that key, charismatic figure that has to make real the artistic/commercial vision of editors, photographers, designers or directors.  The fashion stylist is a creative person but also with an eye on the reality of the imagine or outfit that it’s being created.

How does a stylist fit in the fashion system?

A fashion stylist can work for a fashion magazine, for a brand and decide with the designer the outfits for the runway, work ( often) as a free lance and have, if famous, an agent through which he can be booked for the different kind of project I told you about.

How can you become a stylist?

That is the classic 1 million dollars question! Formally there’s no qualification required to be a stylist, but it is really obvious that if you want to learn and understand truly how to work as a stylist and what to do it is convenient ( read, compulsory) to do a course in fashion styling. The rip-offs are behind the corner so you have to research for the course REALLY well and, if you get the chance, ask around the opinion and comments of those who attended those courses. On line forum are really helpful, so it can be Facebook. I often get messages from student or people interested in fashion that ask me for advice on courses or my opinion about them.

I hope that this first overview was clear and informative enough to get you interested and curious about fashion styling. Next week we’ll dip into a stylist work, unveiling how to create a fashion shoot, starting from an idea, a concept and develop it into a moodboard.
